Expectations

A failure can be defined as when expectations are not met. The less met the greater the failure. Conversely, success is seen as meeting or exceeding expectations. One way to avoid failure is not to have expectations. But then it is very difficult to imagine a worthwhile endeavor that does not have some form of attached expecations.

So the really short answer is that it is impossible to avoid failures.

Update: That is, it is impossible to never fail. There will always be expectations and success and failure is judged based on those expectations.

So logically, you are saying that it is impossible to meet or exceed expectations? Why?

I'm not saying that it is impossible to meet or exceed expectations. I'm saying that it is impossible to never fail.

As an engineer, failure is a great thing. It is the single most effective way we learn from things. Every time you fail at something, you come closer to your goal.

So, failing is part of your success. Succeeding on the other hand is quite tricky.

Failing can be part of your success (long term) if you deal with it properly. If you don't learn from your failure, then it truly is a failure (which I think is in the spirit of what you are saying 8) ).

IMHO if you are not failing at least some of the time, your goals aren't ambitious enough (or worse, you have no goals at all).

It is better to have strived to achieve something big and fall slightly short, than to not strive at all.
